With a degree in criminology and a Master's in criminal justice, I joined the probation service in 2012 and trained as a field officer, managing offenders on license and court orders. I supervised individuals from diverse backgrounds, including the vulnerable, those with complex issues, and offenders who exhibited violent or aggressive behavior, as well as those posing a high risk of serious harm to the public. In this capacity, I contributed to decision-making at Parole Board hearings and MAPPA meetings, developing expertise in analyzing offending behavior, assessing risk, and writing parole reports, among other responsibilities.
Subsequently, I transitioned to the court team as a probation court officer and report writer. In this role, I provided impartial advice to the court regarding community sentences and the most appropriate options for dealing with defendants. I conducted interviews in court and prepared both oral and written pre-sentence reports. My interactions with judges, barristers, and solicitors enriched my knowledge and skills within the criminal justice system. Additionally, I honed my expertise in interviewing for pre-sentence reports, report writing, and risk assessment.
I found great fulfillment in my contributions to the court through report writing and risk assessments. The role of a probation court officer is significant, as it involves representing the Probation Service as a whole, with one's opinions being valued and respected by judges, barristers, and solicitors. I take pride in the positive impact I have made in court and in the lives of the offenders I have supported over the years. I remain committed to the contributions I continue to make through this service and to the individuals who benefit from it.
